Backing up ESXi configuration
Open a console session on vMA with vi-admin
Add the host as target to the vMA: vifp addserver <FQDN or IP Address>
vifptarget -s servername/ip, Enter password of ESXi.
Once the target has been set
vicfg-cfgbackup -s /location/BackupFileName (Note the -s stands for save)
Your host configuration is now saved.
pscp email@example.com:/home/vi-admin/esx/BackupFileName c:, (assuming pscp has been installed on your windows machine, vma ip is 10.10.10.125, and the backup file is stored at /home/vi-admin/esx)
the backup file will then be transferred to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\VirtualStore
You can restore the configuration using the following command from your vMA appliance:
vicfg-cfgbackup -l -server IPaddrOfHost /location/BackupFileName (Note the -l stands for load)
You will be prompted for a username and password and you will also have to type YES as the prompt will say.
Keep in mind you will have to reboot your host after the restore completes.
Start -> all programs -> vmware cli
vicfg-cfgbackup.pl –server <insert IP address of name of server here> -s <Where you want it saved to>.
the command is very simaler to the backup command. all that changes is one switch:
vicfg-cfgbackup.pl –server <server name or IP here> -l <where the file is located>
